This cannulation (face to face) course covers the theory and practical skills required to be able to insert a cannula into an adult. This is suitable for anyone working within a healthcare environment and who will undertake this skill as part of their role. All learners on this course must also have access to a work-based assessor which must be a registered healthcare professional, to undertake clinical supervision in their workplace in order to complete their competency.
The course covers roles and responsibilities; the legal aspects in regard to intravenous cannulation, in respect to mental capacity and informed consent. Infection control measures; preparing the patient and environment; appropriate vein selection; demonstration of effective IV cannulation (in simulation) including infection control precautions; paperwork and recording requirements; documenting time of insertion and flush. Correct actions to be taken in the event of a needlestick injury and the potential complications of IV cannulation and required action to treat such complications.
