Meningococcal B & ACWY Vaccination Training
Meningococcal B and ACWY Immunisation
Meningococcal disease is rare but can progress rapidly to meningitis and septicaemia, with serious and sometimes life-changing consequences. Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect against it, and demand from parents, students and travellers continues to grow.
This course gives pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other immunisers the knowledge and confidence to deliver Meningococcal B and Meningococcal ACWY vaccinations safely and effectively. You will learn about the disease itself, including how it spreads, who is most at risk and the signs and symptoms to look out for. The course then covers the vaccines in detail: their composition, storage and handling, correct administration, and the indications, contraindications and schedules set out in the NHS Schedule. You will also learn how to apply the inclusion and exclusion criteria in the PGD and how to recognise and manage possible adverse reactions.
Written and delivered by experienced clinicians, the course is practical and focused on what you need to run a safe, confident vaccination service.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Describe the aims of the Meningococcal B and Meningococcal ACWY immunisation programmes
- Describe the types of vaccines used and their composition
- Store and handle vaccines correctly
- Administer the vaccines correctly
- Explain the nature of meningococcal disease, including signs and symptoms, transmission and epidemiology
- Explain the indications, contraindications and schedule for each vaccine, in line with the NHS Schedule
- Apply the basic inclusion and exclusion criteria set out in the PGD
- Explain the possible adverse reactions to the vaccines
