What to do:

Your priorities are to:

  • Get help on its way
  • To arrange urgent removal to hospital
  • Reassure the casualty
  • Sit or lay the casualty down
  • Apply direct pressure over the wound for at least 10 minutes

Apply a dressing, if blood seeps through, apply another dressing on top. If the bleed seeps through the second dressing, remove them and apply a fresh one. Check circulation beyond the bandage every 10 minutes to ensure the circulation has not been impaired, in which case, loosen the bandage. Monitor vital signs: Pulse, breathing rate, temperature.

Remember:

Encourage the casualty to lie down as shock is likely to develop, raise and support their legs so they are above the level of their heart.
