Description

Clinical Assessment and Rapid Diagnostics

This face to face course will give pharmacists the knowledge and skills to perform baseline observations on a patient presenting as unwell, and the ability to provide a range of test and treat services. On completion of this course the following rapid diagnostics could be offered:

  • Strep A (throat swab)
  • Chlamydia (patient self swabs)
  • Syphilis (finger prick test)
  • Gonorrhoea (patient self swabs)
  • Flu (nasal swab)
  • Cystitis (requires urine test)
  • Genital Herpes (finger prick test)

Duration – 1 day

Suitable for – Pharmacists and pre-reg pharmacists


At the end of the course learners will be able to:

  • Understand and use the NEWS (National Early Warning Scoring System) to assess a patient
  • Demonstrate how to measure respiration rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, pulse rate and temperature and understand normal boundaries
  • Demonstrate the correct procedure for undertaking urinalysis
  • Demonstrate safe and accurate blood sampling (finger prick testing)
  • Understand blood glucose measurements and their impact on the patient
  • Demonstrate the correct technique for swabbing the throat and nose
  • Demonstrate how to perform a peak flow and guide on inhaler technique

  • Successful completion of question paper
