This course covers the theory and practical skills required to be able to take venous blood samples from adults.
 


Duration – 1 day Venepuncture

Ratio – 1 trainer : 6 delegates

Suitable for – Anyone who requires this skill as part of their role and who has the ability to undertake clinical supervision in their workplace to complete their competency
 


At the end of the course delegates will be able to:

  • Explain their roles and responsibilities in the process of obtaining a blood sample
  • Summarise the legal aspects of venepuncture in respect to mental capacity and informed consent
  • Identify effective infection control measures in relation to venepuncture
  • Demonstrate preparing the patient and environment for venepuncture
  • Correctly demonstrate preparation of venepuncture equipment
  • Explain and demonstrate appropriate vein selection
  • Demonstrate effective venepuncture (in simulation) including infection control precautions
  • Accurately record patient information on the sample, request and within the clinical record, in accordance with organisational practice
  • Correctly identify the actions to be taken in the event of a needlestick injury
  • Identify potential complications of venepuncture and action they would take to treat such complications

Course delivery:

  • Demonstration
  • Discussion
  • Practice under supervision

Course assessment:

  • To perform 10 successful venepunctures on training arm
  • Successfully complete question paper

Prerequisites:

  • Learners must have access to a work-based supervisor to supervise venepuncture in practice (this should be arranged prior to attending the training)
  • Only registered healthcare professionals may act as supervisors in accordance with their regulatory codes

Post course requirements:

  • Supervised venepuncture practice with a registered clinician
  • Must be CQC registered (either as individual or organisation)
